The Ghana Railway Development Authority (GRDA) has announced the successful clearance of a locomotive designated for operations on the Tema–Mpakadan Railway line from the Tema Harbour Port, marking a major milestone in efforts to revitalize Ghana’s railway sector.
According to the Authority, the development forms part of the government’s broader agenda to strengthen rail transport infrastructure and improve both passenger and freight services across the country.
As part of the clearance process, a technical team from the GRDA, together with port officials and representatives of the locomotive manufacturer, conducted comprehensive inspections to verify the locomotive’s condition and readiness for operational deployment.
The Authority noted that the operationalization of the Tema–Mpakadan Railway line is expected to provide significant economic and transportation benefits.
These include encouraging industries and businesses to transport heavy cargo by rail rather than by road, reducing traffic congestion, and minimizing the deterioration of major highways caused by heavy-duty vehicles.
The railway line is also expected to offer a more efficient, reliable, and cost-effective transport alternative for both passengers and businesses while improving logistics and connectivity along the Tema–Mpakadan corridor.
Beyond transportation improvements, the GRDA said the introduction of the locomotive is expected to stimulate economic activity within communities along the corridor by supporting the expansion of freight and passenger services, creating opportunities for trade and contributing to national development.
The Authority described the clearance of the locomotive as another important step toward the full operationalization of the Tema–Mpakadan Railway Line and the transformation of Ghana’s railway network into a modern and efficient transportation system.
