The Ghana Medical Trust Fund (GMTF) is exploring a strategic partnership with Atlantic Lifesciences Limited and the PharmaNova Group to support the local manufacture of essential medicines and make specialised healthcare more affordable for Ghanaians.
The proposed collaboration will focus on the local production of anti-cancer, critical cardiovascular and immunosuppressant medicines, which are currently largely sourced from outside the country.
The initiative is expected to help reduce the high cost of imported medicines while strengthening Ghana’s pharmaceutical manufacturing capacity and improving access to critical medicines for patients requiring specialised care.
As part of efforts to advance the partnership, a delegation from the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, led by its Administrator, Adjoa Obuobia Darko-Opoku, toured the facilities of Atlantic Lifesciences Limited.
The visit provided an opportunity for the two sides to assess the company’s manufacturing capabilities and explore practical and sustainable approaches to producing essential medicines locally.
The proposed partnership forms part of the Trust Fund’s broader efforts to expand access to specialised healthcare and support more Ghanaians facing the financial burden associated with critical illnesses.
By encouraging local pharmaceutical production, the initiative could also contribute to reducing Ghana’s dependence on imported medicines and building a more resilient domestic pharmaceutical industry.
The discussions are expected to continue as the parties work towards identifying viable areas of collaboration and developing mechanisms that will make life-saving medicines more accessible and affordable.
For the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, the focus is clear: lower the cost of essential medicines, support more patients and ultimately save more lives, the Administrator concluded
