The Greater Accra Passenger Transport Executive (GAPTE) has deployed 48 previously grounded Aayalolo buses onto major routes across the Greater Accra Metropoltan Area(GAMA) as part of efforts to improve public transportation and ease traffic congestion.
The development brings the total number of operational Aayalolo buses serving commuters across the region to 128, according to GAPTE.
The Managing Director of GAPTE, Aayalolo deploys 48 repaired buses to ease Accra transport situation, disclosed this when the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga, visited the Madina Aayalolo terminal.
The visit was aimed at assessing the operations of the Aayalolo bus service and exploring measures to improve efficiency and mobility for commuters.
Mr. Dawuda said increasing the number of operational buses had been a major priority for GAPTE, particularly amid persistent traffic congestion and growing transportation needs in the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area.
He explained that GAPTE inherited 80 operational buses and subsequently undertook repairs on 48 additional buses, which have now been added to the fleet serving various routes.
“The 80 buses that we inherited—the most important thing was for us to enhance mobility and ease congestion in the GAMA—and so we had to repair over 48 buses, and these buses have been added to the 80 buses, and so we currently have 128 in our corridors,” he said.
Mr. Dawuda explained that the reference to “corridors” covered the various routes on which Aayalolo buses currently operate.
The deployment is expected to increase the availability of public buses, improve commuter mobility and contribute to efforts to reduce the pressure on roads within the capital.
