Mercy Ships is set to provide more than 2,000 free surgical procedures to patients across Ghana as part of a major healthcare intervention aimed at improving access to specialised medical care.
The hospital ship, currently docked at the Port of Tema, will provide surgeries across various medical specialities to patients referred from different parts of the country.
The procedures will be performed by qualified medical volunteers who have joined Mercy Ships to provide their expertise and services during the ship’s stay in Ghana.
Patients from across the country are expected to travel to the hospital ship in Tema to access the free surgeries, providing an opportunity for people who may otherwise face difficulties accessing specialised surgical care.
Beyond the surgeries, Mercy Ships will collaborate with the Government of Ghana, particularly the Ministry of Health, to provide medical services as well as training and mentorship opportunities for healthcare professionals.
The partnership is expected to strengthen Ghana’s healthcare system and create a lasting impact beyond the duration of the surgical programme by supporting skills development and knowledge transfer among local health professionals.

In a remark President Mahama pledged government’s support and expressed appreciation to the leadership for spearheading the initiative, as well as the Ministers of Finance, Health and Foreign Affairs for their roles in facilitating the collaboration.
The intervention is expected to complement government’s efforts to expand access to quality healthcare and specialised medical services while strengthening partnerships that contribute to the long-term development of Ghana’s health sector.
