Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has announced that Parliament will not sit on Friday, July 10, 2026, to enable Members of Parliament from flood-affected constituencies to participate in the National General Cleaning Exercise.
The decision follows government’s declaration of Friday, July 10, and Saturday, July 11, as National General Cleaning Days in seven regions impacted by the recent floods.
The nationwide exercise is intended to clear choked drains, desilt waterways and improve sanitation in vulnerable communities as part of efforts to prevent further flooding.
Addressing the House, Speaker Bagbin said the decision was taken after consultations with parliamentary leadership on how Parliament could support the national cleanup initiative.
According to him, suspending Friday’s sitting would allow MPs from affected areas to return to their constituencies to provide leadership and work alongside residents during the exercise.
He noted that there was unanimous agreement among parliamentary leaders that Members should actively participate in the campaign to restore affected communities and improve environmental sanitation.
The Speaker further indicated that Parliament would communicate any adjustments to its business schedule to Members in due course.
The National General Cleaning Exercise is expected to bring together residents, local authorities, security agencies and other stakeholders in a coordinated effort to clear drains and improve sanitation in flood-prone communities across the affected regions.
