Fuel price hikes do not justify transport fare increase – Commercial Operators warn

Private road transport operators have announced plans to increase transport fares by 30% effective Thursday, September 10, 2026, citing rising fuel prices and other operational costs.

The decision was communicated to the Minister for Transport in a letter dated September 3, 2026, and signed by the General Secretaries of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC).

The operators said the planned increase follows a meeting with the Transport Minister on September 2, 2026, over the challenges affecting their operations.

“We wish to inform you officially of our intention to increase transport fares by 30% effective on the 10th September, 2026,” the letter stated.

The transport operators acknowledged the government’s intervention to reduce the impact of fuel prices but said the measure had not addressed all the cost pressures facing the sector.

“Much as we appreciate the president’s intervention by absorbing GHC2.00 of the fuel price, the current pump prices and other related expenses requiring that transport fares should be adjusted upwards,” they said.

The operators, however, indicated that the proposed increase could still be discussed, saying their leadership remained open to further engagement with the Transport Ministry.

The proposed adjustment comes after President John Dramani Mahama announced a GH¢2 reduction in the price of diesel as part of measures aimed at cushioning transport operators and other businesses from rising fuel costs.

Transport fares in Ghana are generally reviewed in consultation with transport unions and relevant authorities, taking into consideration changes in fuel prices, spare parts, maintenance costs and other operational expenses.

If implemented, the proposed 30% increase could affect fares across various routes and increase transportation costs for commuters.
