Deputy Finance Minister Thomas Nyarko Ampem has called for the introduction of innovative incentive mechanisms to motivate Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) Customs officers, during the celebration of International Customs Day.
The event was held under the theme “Customs Protecting Society Through Vigilance and Commitment.”
Speaking on behalf of the Minister, who was unable to attend due to prior engagements, Deputy Minister Nyarko commended the efforts of customs officers in 2025 and encouraged them not only to meet their 2026 targets but to exceed them.
He also congratulated all award recipients, acknowledging the support of their proud families.
Highlighting the importance of incentivizing ethical conduct, the Deputy Minister suggested exploring ways to reward officers who help recover revenue lost to fraudulent activities. He proposed options such as annual awards, promotions, or a percentage of recovered revenue.
“Either way, monies are going somewhere,” he noted. “So why don’t we take it as a statement and give you a percentage, rather than letting the fraudsters take it?”
He added that while the initiative may present challenges, it is essential to put mechanisms in place to encourage officers to do the right thing.
The event was attended by several dignitaries, including the Commissioner General of GRA, Major General Carl Modey (Retired), and other senior officials, who collectively acknowledged the critical role of customs in safeguarding Ghana’s borders and economy.
