The Bole District Police Command has intercepted 73 parcels of a substance suspected to be cannabis, popularly known as Indian hemp, during a routine highway operation along the Banda Nkwanta–Teslima road in the Savannah Region.
The suspected narcotics were discovered in a commercial vehicle travelling from Techiman to Wa with registration number AS 4874-25 after police officers at a checkpoint conducted a search of the vehicle following suspicions over the contents of some luggage on board.
The search led to the recovery of 73 parcels of the suspected cannabis concealed in bags.
Police subsequently arrested the driver of the vehicle and a woman believed to be in her early forties, who allegedly claimed ownership of the consignment, to assist with investigations.
According to sources familiar with the case, the woman allegedly admitted that the suspected narcotic substance was being transported to Sengye, a community near Bole.
Investigators are yet to establish the intended use of the consignment or verify claims regarding its final destination.
Sources further alleged that the suspects attempted to offer police officers GHS30,000 in exchange for their release.
The officers reportedly rejected the alleged offer and proceeded with the arrest in line with police procedures.
The two suspects remain in police custody while investigations continue.
The seized substance is expected to undergo forensic examination to confirm its composition before any charges are filed.
The interception comes amid intensified efforts by security agencies to combat the trafficking and distribution of illicit drugs across the country.
The Ghana Police Service has reiterated its commitment to tackling narcotics-related offences and corruption, while encouraging members of the public to volunteer credible information to support law enforcement efforts.
The suspects are expected to be arraigned before court upon the conclusion of investigations.
As with all criminal proceedings, the suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty by a court of competent jurisdiction.
