The Ghana Medical Trust Fund (GMTF) has intensified efforts to improve access to specialist healthcare across the country, with its management team led by Administrator, Adjoa Obuobia Darko-Opoku, undertaking a working visit to the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital (CCTH) to assess the implementation of the Fund’s partnership with the facility.

The high-level engagement, hosted by the Chief Executive Officer of CCTH, Dr. Eric Ngyedu, forms part of GMTF’s nationwide review of partner institutions as the Fund transitions from its pilot phase to full-scale implementation.

A major focus of the visit was to evaluate the impact of the collaboration following the successful treatment of five patients under the Trust Fund’s initial 50-patient pilot programme at the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital.

The pilot initiative served as a testing ground for the Fund’s operational systems, financing arrangements and healthcare delivery processes ahead of the national rollout.

Officials from both institutions used the engagement to review lessons from the pilot phase and identify strategies to enhance service delivery for future beneficiaries.

Discussions also centred on the ongoing patient onboarding process and the implementation of the GMTFcare digital platform, an electronic system designed to facilitate patient registration, eligibility verification, treatment approvals, claims processing and reimbursements.

Management teams from the Trust Fund and the hospital examined the effectiveness of the platform within the facility, identified operational and technical challenges and explored solutions to ensure patients continue to receive timely and seamless access to specialist healthcare services.

Speaking during the engagement, officials of the Trust Fund reaffirmed that continuous monitoring and close collaboration with partner hospitals are essential to maintaining transparency, efficiency and quality healthcare delivery.

The meeting further explored opportunities to strengthen institutional collaboration, improve workflow processes and enhance the overall patient experience under the Ghana Medical Trust Fund.

Since the commencement of active implementation, the Trust Fund has prioritised regular engagements with healthcare providers nationwide to ensure effective service delivery and promptly address operational challenges.

The visit to the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital underscores GMTF’s commitment to building a responsive and accountable healthcare financing system that supports patients living with chronic and high-cost Non-Communicable Diseases while continuously improving the quality of care delivered through partner institutions.

The Fund maintains that its success will be measured not only by the number of patients enrolled but by its ability to ensure every beneficiary receives timely, efficient and compassionate healthcare.
