Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has received a delegation from the Pan-African Writers Association (PAWA) Ghana to discuss the Association’s objectives and its role in promoting literature, preserving indigenous languages, and advancing Pan-African ideals through writing.

During the engagement, the Vice President commended PAWA Ghana for its continued advocacy and contribution to the development of African literature and cultural identity.

She acknowledged the efforts of distinguished African scholars and writers, including Professor Ladé Wosornu, whose work has contributed to the promotion of African languages and literary excellence.

Professor Opoku-Agyemang stressed the importance of strengthening indigenous languages as a key component of education and cultural development, noting that languages serve not only as tools for communication but also as carriers of identity, history, values, and knowledge.

She called for greater emphasis on the use of local languages in teaching and learning, particularly at the foundational stages of education, to help improve learning outcomes and preserve Ghana’s cultural heritage.

The Vice President also urged writers to continue producing works that highlight Africa’s achievements, resilience, and potential, emphasising the power of literature to shape perspectives, influence values, and inspire future generations.

She particularly encouraged investment in children’s literature, noting that positive and empowering stories can help young Africans develop confidence, strengthen their sense of identity, and appreciate their heritage.

Professor Opoku-Agyemang encouraged members of PAWA Ghana to remain committed to their mission and view challenges as opportunities for innovation and growth.

She reaffirmed that the work of writers remains essential to building a confident, culturally conscious, and self-aware Africa.
