The Overlord of Dagbon, Yaa Naa Abubakari Mahama, has been laid to rest at the Gbewaa Palace following the completion of traditional rites marking his passing.
The late Dagbon King was formally declared dead after royal drummers and the Sapashini performed the customary rites in line with Dagbon traditions.
Following his burial, the first son of the late Yaa Naa was enskinned as the Kampakuya Naa and Regent of Dagbon.
The Kampakuya Naa will assume temporary responsibility for the affairs of the Dagbon Kingdom and provide traditional leadership until a new Yaa Naa is selected and enskinned in accordance with Dagbon customs.
Yaa Naa Abubakari Mahama ascended the Yendi skin in 2019 following the death of his predecessor and went on to lead the kingdom until his passing in 2026.
During his reign, he was widely recognised for promoting peace, unity and development, with his leadership contributing to the consolidation of reconciliation efforts after years of chieftaincy tensions in Dagbon.
His tenure was also marked by efforts to strengthen traditional institutions and restore the dignity and authority of the Dagbon Kingdom.
The revered traditional ruler died at the age of 87, bringing to an end a significant chapter in the history of Dagbon and Ghana’s traditional leadership.
