The National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye, has announced that the party will stage a march to the offices of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) on Monday, July 13, to demand answers over the arrest of Dennis Miracles Aboagye.
According to Mr Boakye, the planned demonstration is aimed at seeking clarity on the circumstances surrounding the arrest of Mr Aboagye, which the party believes may be an attempt to intimidate members of the opposition.
Speaking in an interview on Sunday, July 12, Mr Boakye alleged that Mr Aboagye had not received any prior invitation, notice or communication from EOCO regarding any investigation or allegations of wrongdoing before his arrest.
He expressed concern over what he described as the increasing use of state institutions to target political opponents, arguing that such actions could undermine Ghana’s democratic principles and the rule of law.
“Miracles has not received any invitation from EOCO.
He has not been informed of any wrongdoing.
He has not been told that he is under any form of investigation,” Mr Boakye stated.
The NPP National Organiser stressed that the party supports accountability and would cooperate with any lawful investigation involving its members, but insisted that due process and constitutional safeguards must be respected.
His comments follow claims by the General Secretary of the NPP, Justin Kodua Frimpong, that Mr Aboagye was arrested by EOCO officials with the assistance of immigration officers at the Accra International Airport shortly after arriving in the country.
The party further alleged that Mr Aboagye’s lawyers had been denied access to him, that his whereabouts had not been disclosed, and that no formal charges had been brought against him.
As of the time of publication, EOCO had not issued an official statement on the arrest or responded to the allegations made by the opposition party.
The planned march is expected to draw party supporters and senior officials as the NPP intensifies calls for information regarding the circumstances of Mr Aboagye’s detention.
