CETAG demands probe into death of Gbewa College lecturer after alleged military assault

The Colleges of Education Teachers’ Association of Ghana (CETAG) has called for an immediate and independent investigation into the death of Abdulai Issaka, a Science Lecturer at Gbewa College of Education, following an alleged encounter with military personnel during curfew hours.

CETAG, in a statement, said it received the news of Mr. Issaka’s death with “profound sadness, shock, and grave concern.”

According to the Association, information available to it alleges that the lecturer was physically assaulted by military personnel after he was found outside during curfew hours on Friday, September 11, 2026.

CETAG said the alleged assault resulted in Mr. Issaka’s death, although it stressed that the claims must be properly investigated.

“If substantiated, such conduct would constitute an egregious violation of the sanctity of human life and the fundamental rights of a citizen,” the Association said.

It added: “Being outside during curfew hours, irrespective of the circumstances, can never justify the beating of a person to death.”

The teachers’ association condemned what it described as the reported use of excessive and lethal force and demanded that the circumstances surrounding the lecturer’s death be investigated with urgency and transparency.

CETAG wants investigators to establish what happened before, during and after the alleged incident, identify the military personnel involved and determine the precise cause of death.

The Association has also called on the Government, Ghana Armed Forces, Ghana Police Service and the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) to ensure a thorough investigation.

CETAG further insisted that the investigation must be conducted without intimidation, interference or protection for anyone because of their rank or position.

“Where the investigation establishes that military personnel or any other persons were responsible for unlawful acts leading to Mr. Issaka’s death, CETAG demands that the perpetrators be arrested, prosecuted, and brought to justice in accordance with the laws of Ghana,” it said.

“No person irrespective of position, uniform, or authority should be above the law.”

The Association has also appealed to the authorities to provide Mr. Issaka’s family with full information about the circumstances surrounding his death and offer the necessary support.

CETAG said it was particularly concerned about the emotional impact of the incident on staff and students of Gbewa College of Education.

It has therefore appealed to the Acting Principal, management, staff and students to remain calm and allow the investigative and judicial processes to proceed.

“We understand the anger, pain, and frustration that may accompany such a tragic loss; however, we urge all members of the College community to allow the investigative and judicial processes to take their course,” CETAG said.

The Association pledged to monitor developments and engage relevant state institutions to ensure the matter is not ignored.

“The life of every Ghanaian matters. No curfew violation can ever justify the unlawful taking of a human life,” CETAG said.
