The Ghana Police Service has apprehended Eric Afoakwa, popularly known as “Chad,” who had evaded justice after being convicted by the Accra High Court for multiple financial offences.
In a statement, the Police said Afoakwa was arrested on July 6, 2026, by officers from the Anti-Armed Robbery Unit while allegedly attempting to leave the country. The operation was conducted on the directive of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP).
Afoakwa was convicted in absentia in 2019 on five of six charges, including money laundering, defrauding by false pretences, forgery of official documents and tax evasion. He was sentenced by Justice Georgina Mensah Datsa to eight years’ imprisonment, with the sentences to run concurrently. The court also ordered him to refund US$132,660 to the complainant.
After the ruling, the convict disappeared, leading the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) to declare him wanted and appeal to the public for information that could lead to his arrest.
The Police disclosed that Afoakwa will be handed over to EOCO to facilitate the execution of the court’s judgment.
Reaffirming its commitment to enforcing the law, the Service said it will continue working with other state institutions to ensure individuals who evade justice are located and prosecuted.
“The Ghana Police Service will continue to collaborate with relevant state agencies to ensure that fugitives from justice are arrested to face the full rigours of the law.”
