The Ghana Police Service has announced a series of intelligence-led operations that have resulted in the arrest of several suspects, the recovery of firearms and ammunition, and the disruption of suspected robbery networks operating in different parts of the country.

Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr Christian Tetteh Yohuno, said the operations were conducted following weeks of intelligence gathering and coordination involving the Police Headquarters and various Regional Police Commands.

Addressing the media at the National Police Headquarters on Monday, September 7, 2026, the IGP said the operations targeted criminal networks in the Western, Northern, Savannah and Greater Accra regions.

He said the operations had produced seven major breakthroughs involving murder investigations, bank and highway robberies, armed robbery networks and illegal weapons trading.

Mr Yohuno announced the arrest of 32-year-old Abraham Awundok in connection with the alleged murder of Dr Jesse Amuah and his wife, Mrs Elizabeth Amuah Esi, who were reported missing in April 2026.

According to the IGP, investigations led police to suspect that the couple had been murdered, after which their remains were recovered and conveyed to the Police Hospital Morgue for preservation and autopsy.

Police investigations, he said, established that Awundok, who worked as an errand boy for the couple, was allegedly responsible for the murders and subsequently took their mobile phones, money and private vehicle before leaving Ghana for the United Arab Emirates.

Mr Yohuno said the suspect was declared wanted through an INTERPOL Red Notice and was deported from Dubai to Ghana on August 30 by investigators from the Anti-Armed Robbery Unit and INTERPOL.

He said the suspect admitted to the murders during interrogation and remained in police custody as investigations continued.

The IGP also disclosed that police had disrupted a suspected robbery syndicate accused of targeting banks and their customers in Accra and Tema.

He said the group was suspected of monitoring bank customers, using master keys to open vehicles and, in some cases, breaking into vehicles after customers had withdrawn money.

According to Mr Yohuno, surveillance operations identified members of the group operating around banks in the Greater Accra and Tema metropolitan areas.

He said on August 13, 2026, the suspects were monitored from Spintex towards Labone and Cantonments, where they were allegedly positioning themselves between several banks.

A police response subsequently foiled the planned attack, he said, resulting in two suspects being shot dead, one escaping and another being arrested.

A search of a Toyota Highlander allegedly used by the group led to the recovery of 13 different vehicle registration numbers and a Blow F90 pistol.

The police said investigations also suggested that the suspects brought vehicles into Ghana and replaced Nigerian registration plates with Ghanaian number plates for their alleged criminal activities.

Mr Yohuno said Augustine Okechuku Maazi, 49, had been remanded by the court and remained in custody.

The Police Administration also announced the dismantling of a suspected robbery gang operating across Wassa Akropong, Diaso, Dome, Abofour Camp and the Manso enclave.

Mr Yohuno said sustained intelligence-led operations between August and September 4 resulted in the arrest of five suspects and the death of another suspect during an operation.

Police recovered three AK-47 assault rifles, five magazines, 357 rounds of AK-47 ammunition and two vehicles.

The IGP said the gang was allegedly responsible for attacks targeting gold dealers, mining sites and communities in the affected areas.

He also disclosed that five suspects had been arrested in connection with the robbery and murder of a 40-year-old gold buyer, Seth Kobina, at Agona Fie near Agona Nkwanta in the Western Region.

According to the police, two locally manufactured pistols, five live BB cartridges, a metal bar and two cutlasses were recovered from the suspects.

In the Northern Region, three suspects have been arrested in connection with a series of armed robbery cases in Buipe, Tamale and Mion.

The suspects were identified as Yacouba Oumar, Abdul Alhassan Kudus and Abdul Rahman Haruna, alias Saaga.

The police said the suspects were linked to a gang believed to operate with two AK-47 rifles and a pump-action gun along the Fumbisi-Yagaba road.

They were also allegedly involved in the robbery and murder of a mobile money vendor at Fofulso, near Damango Junction.

The three suspects remain in police custody assisting investigations, while efforts are underway to arrest other alleged accomplices and retrieve the remaining weapons.

Mr Yohuno further announced the death of Alhaji Imoro Beliko, also known as Alhaji Yacouba, Masaji, Muimen or Yakubu, whom police identified as the alleged mastermind behind the June 29 robbery at the Buipe Cattle Market.

The police said the 60-year-old trader allegedly contracted robbers and supplied weapons to attack people carrying large sums of money to the market.

The robbery resulted in two mobile money vendors being attacked and about GH¢430,000 being stolen, according to the police.

Mr Yohuno said a police intelligence operation on September 5 located the suspect at the cattle market area.

He said the suspect attempted to escape during the operation and was shot.

He later died from his injuries.

The Police Service has also arrested a suspected gang leader and other persons in connection with a highway robbery on the Enyiresi-Sekyere stretch of the Accra-Kumasi highway.

The incident occurred on August 18, 2026, according to the police.

Those arrested include a suspected gang leader identified as Obotan, his mother, who police allege concealed the weapon used in the robbery, and persons identified as Issaka Napson, Issaka Majeed and Majeed Huzeifa.

A 14-year-old juvenile who allegedly served as a lookout was also arrested.

Police said searches of the suspects’ residences resulted in the recovery of several firearms and other items, including an Adler pump-action gun, a double-barrel gun, three single-barrel guns, a locally manufactured pistol, ammunition, cutlasses, handcuffs, jack knives, pepper spray, a tactical vest and an unregistered motorbike.

The suspects are in police custody assisting investigations, while efforts are ongoing to arrest another suspect identified as Tanko.

In another operation, the Police Service arrested five suspects accused of trading in firearms and recovered eight AK-47 assault rifles.

The operation, conducted between June and July 2026 by the office of the Special Operations Assistant to the IGP, also led to the recovery of an SMG rifle and two foreign pistols.

The suspects were identified as Munkaila Yusif, alias Karyima, 34; Abdulai Fatawu Boniface, 32; Abdallah Imrana Gomda, 43; Sualesu Sheriffa, 20; and Ibrahim Adams, alias Ibru, 35.

The police said the suspects had been remanded into lawful custody by the Accra Circuit Court, with the case adjourned to September 8, 2026.

Other suspects believed to be involved and currently at large are being pursued, the IGP said.

Mr Yohuno commended police personnel involved in the operations and said the Police Administration would continue to recognise and reward officers who demonstrate commitment and professionalism.

He also thanked President John Dramani Mahama and the government for logistical support, particularly the provision of armoured vehicles and pickup trucks, which he said had contributed to the success of the operations.

The IGP appealed to members of the public to continue providing credible information on suspects at large to the police.

He said information could be reported at the nearest police station or through the Police Emergency Line on 191, assuring the public that such information would be treated confidentially.

Mr Yohuno said the Police Service would sustain its operations against organised crime and warned criminals that the service would continue pursuing them regardless of where they attempted to hide.
