The Ghana Chamber of Mines says it is coordinating with its member mining companies to deliver relief assistance to people affected by the June 29 floods, as recovery efforts continue in impacted communities.
In a statement released on Tuesday, July 7, the Chamber conveyed its condolences to families who lost loved ones and sympathised with those whose homes, businesses and livelihoods were affected by the flooding, which also caused extensive damage to public infrastructure.
Chief Executive Officer Dr. Kenneth Ashigbey said the mining industry is committed to complementing national efforts to assist victims.
“The Chamber stands with all affected families during this difficult period. We are working with our member companies to provide practical support that will help bring relief, comfort and hope to those affected,” he said.
The Chamber also appealed to residents in flood-affected areas to remain vigilant about public health by maintaining clean surroundings, drinking safe water, disposing of refuse properly and seeking medical care quickly if they show signs of illness to help prevent disease outbreaks after the floods.
It further acknowledged the response of emergency agencies, including the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), the Ghana Armed Forces, the Ghana National Fire Service, the Ghana Police Service, healthcare workers, volunteers and other first responders for their rescue and relief operations.
The Chamber noted that the planned intervention continues its tradition of supporting national emergencies, pointing to its assistance for communities affected by the 2023 Akosombo Dam spillage, when it mobilised resources through its member companies to aid relief efforts.
