The communications team of broadcaster and political commentator Okatakyie Afrifa Mensah has confirmed that he remains in police custody at the Asante Mampong Divisional Police Command following his arrest on Sunday.
In a statement titled For The Records, issued by Kwame Afrifa Mensah and shared by the team, it said Mr Afrifa was arrested at approximately 7:40 a.m.
According to the statement, Mr Afrifa’s family, legal representatives and campaign team were not informed of his whereabouts for several hours after the arrest, a situation the team said created anxiety among supporters and associates.
The statement indicated that he was later transferred to the Asante Mampong Divisional Police Command at about 5:00 p.m., where he remains in custody pending what the team described as “further lawful processes.”
The communications team maintained that Mr Afrifa was accompanied by supporters who were unarmed and had no intention of engaging in violence.
It also rejected claims that he owns or operates a vigilante group.
The statement further alleged that four members of Mr Afrifa’s team sustained gunshot injuries during the incident and are currently receiving medical treatment.
The team appealed to supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the general public to remain calm, peaceful and law-abiding, expressing confidence in the judicial process.
It added that future updates would be communicated through Mr Afrifa’s lawyers and authorised spokespersons.
Mr Afrifa was arrested following disturbances that erupted during the New Patriotic Party’s constituency executive elections in the Afigya Sekyere East Constituency in the Ashanti Region.
Reports indicate that the broadcaster had gone to the election venue to present a court injunction seeking to halt the exercise over allegations that some names had been unlawfully removed from the delegates’ register.
The situation reportedly escalated into violence, prompting an intervention by the police, which led to his arrest.
Mr Afrifa is also widely reported to be considering a bid to contest the parliamentary seat for the Afigya Sekyere East Constituency on the ticket of the NPP
