The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) says Ghana’s fight against illegal mining is far from over, despite a noticeable decline in galamsey activities in recent months.
Speaking at the NAIMOS Editors’ Forum and Quarterly Press Briefing on March 25, the Director of Operations, Col. Dominic Buah, cautioned against complacency, stressing that sustained efforts are needed to consolidate gains made so far.
“We’re not out of the woods yet but galamsey activities have gone down drastically,” he stated.
Col. Buah explained that while enforcement operations have yielded results, the Secretariat continues to face significant operational challenges, particularly limited logistics and funding, which threaten to slow progress.
He reiterated calls for support from corporate organisations and non-governmental bodies to strengthen ongoing operations, noting that additional resources would enhance the task force’s capacity to sustain pressure on illegal miners.
The NAIMOS Director also warned that resistance from some mining communities remains a concern, emphasizing that operatives are prepared to defend themselves if confronted.
He maintained that the fight against illegal mining requires continuous vigilance, improved resourcing, and collective national support to ensure long-term success.
