The Government has deposited US$1.7 billion into a dedicated account at the Bank of Ghana to finance the construction of the proposed Accra-Kumasi Expressway, Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has announced.
Presenting the 2026 Mid-Year Budget Review in Parliament, Dr. Forson said the funds have been ring-fenced and will only be accessed after the award of the main construction contract, ensuring that financing for the flagship infrastructure project is secured.
He disclosed that preparatory works on the 176-kilometre six-lane expressway, which forms part of the government’s Big Push Programme, are progressing steadily.
According to the Finance Minister, the Ghana Armed Forces have already cleared about 70 per cent of the road corridor required for the project, while feasibility studies, engineering designs and compensation assessments are ongoing.
Dr. Forson further announced that procurement for the main construction contract is expected to commence in September this year.
The Accra-Kumasi Expressway is expected to significantly reduce travel time between the two cities to approximately two hours, while enhancing road safety, easing traffic congestion and stimulating economic activity along the corridor, he concluded.
