Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson has announced that the government will allocate GHS400 million to retool and modernise public transport services across the country.
Presenting the 2026 Mid-Year Budget Review in Parliament on Thursday, Dr Forson said the funds would be used to procure modern, high-capacity and fuel-efficient buses for Metro Mass Transit, Aayalolo and the State Transport Company (STC).
According to the Finance Minister, the investment is aimed at improving the quality and reliability of public transportation while reducing the long queues and overcrowding experienced by commuters during peak hours.
He explained that the initiative forms part of the government’s broader strategy to strengthen the public transport system and provide safer, more efficient and affordable mobility for Ghanaians.
Dr Forson further disclosed that the government is rolling out a strategic public transport programme across all 16 regions to expand access to reliable transport services and support economic activity nationwide.
He said the investment underscores the government’s commitment to improving urban mobility, easing commuter challenges and enhancing the efficiency of Ghana’s public transportation network.
