Callistus Mahama, Executive Secretary to the President, has revealed plans to expand Ghana’s presidential air fleet with a dedicated aircraft for President John Dramani Mahama, expected to enter service by November 2026.
The announcement comes amid public discussions about the use of private aircraft for official presidential travel.
Dr. Mahama explained that the new jet will allow the Presidency to rely fully on state assets, eliminating temporary arrangements that have raised concerns over practicality, security, and perceptions of conflicts of interest.
“Presidential travel is unlike any other journey. It carries layers of responsibility—security, diplomatic engagements, and the need for the Head of State to function as the executive authority even while abroad,” he said. He added that commercial travel is often not feasible for long-haul or tightly scheduled trips, given security and logistical constraints.
The aircraft acquisition is part of a broader retooling of the Ghana Armed Forces and state aviation infrastructure.
According to Dr. Mahama, the upgrade aligns with President Mahama’s Reset Agenda, which prioritises institutional strengthening, public trust, and responsible governance.
“The conversation is not simply about an aircraft. It is about rebuilding systems that should have been stronger in the first place,” Dr. Mahama said.
Once operational, the dedicated jet will ensure that presidential travel is safe, efficient, and fully under state control, while reducing public concerns about improvised arrangements.
