England produced a scintillating attacking display to defeat France 6-4 in a dramatic third-place playoff at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, capping their campaign with a podium finish in one of the tournament’s most memorable matches.
What was expected to be a low-key encounter between two disappointed semifinalists instead turned into a ten-goal thriller, with both sides displaying attacking flair in an end-to-end contest that captivated fans.
England entered the match after a narrow 2-1 semifinal defeat to defending champions Argentina, while France were beaten 2-0 by Spain. Despite missing out on the final, both teams showed determination to finish the tournament on a high.
Thomas Tuchel’s side made a blistering start, taking the lead after just three minutes through Declan Rice, whose spectacular long-range strike flew beyond goalkeeper Mike Maignan into the top corner.
England doubled their advantage minutes later when Rice’s corner was met by defender Ezri Konsa, who powered home a header to make it 2-0.
The Three Lions continued to dominate, with Bukayo Saka extending the lead after finishing a well-worked move involving Marcus Rashford.
Saka struck again before halftime, firing a powerful left-footed effort into the far corner to send England into the break with a commanding 4-0 lead.
France responded strongly after the restart, inspired by captain Kylian Mbappé.
The forward pulled one back within three minutes of the second half before setting up Bradley Barcola to reduce the deficit to 4-2.
Mbappé added his second goal with a powerful header from a Michael Olise cross, bringing France within one goal and setting up a tense finish.
The strike also saw Mbappé become the outright leading scorer in FIFA World Cup history, while Olise set a tournament record for the most assists in a single edition since 1966.
England restored their two-goal cushion in the 78th minute after Malo Gusto fouled Djed Spence inside the penalty area.
Saka calmly converted the resulting penalty to complete his hat-trick and make it 5-3.
France refused to surrender, with Ousmane Dembélé curling home a superb effort in stoppage time to narrow the score to 5-4.
However, England had the final word. Deep into added time, Jude Bellingham embarked on a powerful solo run from midfield before unleashing an unstoppable strike from outside the penalty area to seal a remarkable 6-4 victory.
The result secured third place for England and provided a positive conclusion to their World Cup campaign after falling short in the semifinals.
For France, the defeat marked a disappointing end to the tournament despite an impressive second-half comeback that ultimately proved insufficient to overturn England’s dominant first-half display.
England’s victory was powered by Bukayo Saka’s hat-trick, Declan Rice’s influential midfield performance, and Jude Bellingham’s late moment of brilliance, ensuring the Three Lions ended the tournament with a memorable and entertaining victory.
