The Volta Regional Minister, James Gunu, has outlined an ambitious development agenda for the region, highlighting ongoing and planned investments in education, healthcare, infrastructure, water supply and economic empowerment.
Speaking during an engagement with the Volta Regional House of Chiefs in Ho, Mr. Gunu reaffirmed the government’s commitment to accelerating socio-economic development across the region through targeted interventions designed to improve living standards and create opportunities for residents.
On education, the Minister disclosed that a number of infrastructure projects are currently underway with support from the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund).
According to him, the projects include the construction of 24 dining halls, 40 dormitory blocks, classroom blocks, science laboratories, libraries and staff accommodation facilities in senior high schools across the region.
He explained that the investments are aimed at addressing longstanding infrastructure deficits within the education sector and creating a more conducive environment for teaching and learning.
Mr. Gunu noted that improving educational infrastructure remains a key priority of government as part of efforts to enhance access to quality education and improve academic outcomes.
The Regional Minister also announced plans to strengthen traditional governance institutions through the construction of chiefs’ palaces across the region.
He revealed that all Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies in the Volta Region have been tasked with constructing at least two chiefs’ palaces each, with funding support from the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF).
According to him, the initiative is intended to address the significant shortage of palace infrastructure within the region.
He indicated that while there are currently about 207 chiefs’ palaces, the estimated requirement stands at approximately 460.
Mr. Gunu said the project would provide suitable facilities for traditional authorities and support their role in local governance and community development.
In the health sector, the Minister announced progress in the implementation of the government’s health kiosk initiative under the Free Primary Healthcare Programme.
He stated that several health kiosks are already under construction, while others are nearing completion in various districts across the region.
The initiative, he explained, is expected to improve access to basic healthcare services, particularly in underserved and remote communities, while supporting the government’s broader objective of achieving universal healthcare coverage.
Mr. Gunu assured the chiefs that government remains committed to working closely with traditional authorities and other stakeholders to ensure the successful implementation of development projects across the region.
