Rev. Stephen Yenusom Wengam has been overwhelmingly re-elected as General Superintendent of Assemblies of God, Ghana.

He secured nearly 90 per cent of the votes cast in elections held during the church’s 32nd Biennial General Council Meeting at Gomoa Fetteh in the Central Region on Friday, August 21, 2026.

Rev. Wengam who is also the Head Pastor of the Cedar Mountain Chapel in East Legon polled 3,727 votes, representing 89.61 per cent, to defeat Rev. Dr. Kwame B. Bansah, of the Charity Assemblies of God in the Adenta District of the Accra West Region who obtained 432 votes, representing 10.39 per cent.

The election returned Rev. Wengam to office for another four-year term and completed the process of electing the church’s top leadership team, with new office holders also elected to the positions of Assistant General Superintendent and General Secretary and General Treasurer.

A total of 4,159 valid votes were cast in the contest for General Superintendent, with seven ballots rejected, bringing the total number of votes cast to 4,166.

Rev. Dr. Kwadwo Bempah of Holy Hill Chapel in the Adabraka District of Accra West Region was elected Assistant General Superintendent, while Rev. Dr. Albert Anane of the Father’s House in Koforidua in Eastern Region ‘A’ emerged as the new General Secretary.

Rev. Simon Abu Baba of the Central Chapel in Mim retained his position as General Treasurer after standing unopposed.

Rev. Mrs Esther Oduro Dwomo was elected National Women’s Ministries Director, while Mr. Silas Amankwaah was retained as National Men’s Ministry Director, unopposed. Other Directors include Rev. Michael K. N. Atisu, the National Sunday School Ministry Director, and Rev. Henry Kyei Mensah, the National Youth Ministries Director. They all retained their positions unopposed.

The event saw the appointment of new officers. Rev. Boniface Keelson was appointed the new Foreign Missions Director, while Rev. Aaron Lambon Fant, who was adjudged the Best Church Planter at the event, is now the new Home Missions Director.

In his acceptance remarks, Rev. Wengam pledged to serve members of Assemblies of God, Ghana, with renewed commitment, humility and dedication.

“To all who endorsed me with your precious votes, you will never regret your sacred decision,” he said.

Rev. Wengam described the electoral process as peaceful, fair and transparent.

He noted that although elections could create tension, the process had been characterised by minimal acrimony and urged members to move beyond competition and work together for the growth of the church.

“After competition comes cooperation,” Rev. Wengam declared.

“The competition for the highest position in Assemblies of God, Ghana, is over. A gigantic task to build the church remains.”

He called on members to put the election behind them, strengthen the bonds of unity and work together in love.

“A local proverb has it that one person cannot embrace a baobab tree,” he said, explaining that the task of leading and building the church could not be carried by one person.

He said the new leadership would need the support of elected and non-elected leaders, pastors, deacons, deaconesses, departmental leaders and members across the country.

Rev. Wengam’s victory marks a significant increase in his electoral support compared with his first election four years ago.

“Four years ago, you gave me 61 per cent. Four years later, you gave me almost 90 per cent,” he said after being declared elected.

Rev. Wengam thanked both those who voted for him and those who supported his opponent, stressing that every participant in the election had played an important role in the church’s democratic process.

“And for those who preferred a different candidate, you deserve my fullest appreciation for being an essential part of the democratic process,” he further observed.

He said his second term would focus on advancing the church’s transformation agenda and ensuring that its major strategic initiatives achieved their intended goals.

Among the priorities he highlighted was the Centenary City Project, which is being developed to mark the church’s 100th anniversary.

“The Centenary City Project to mark our 100 years will certainly materialise in our lifetime,” he stressed.

He also reiterated the church’s commitment to evangelism under the MM33 agenda of the World Assemblies of God Fellowship, with the goal of reaching communities across Ghana with the Gospel.

“We are determined to evangelise the entire nation and reach every village, every town and every city with the Gospel,” he stated.

Rev. Wengam indicated that the church would also work to strengthen its position and influence by harnessing the talents and human resources within its membership.

“Leadership is about turning bold ideas into shared progress,” he said.

According to him, Assemblies of God, Ghana, is endowed with significant human resources and would seek to leverage its strengths in worship, biblical teaching, leadership and service to advance the mission of the church.

He acknowledged that challenges remained but expressed confidence that, with God’s help and the collective efforts of the church, they could be turned into opportunities for growth and transformation.

With the 32nd Biennial General Council Meeting coming to an end, Rev. Wengam said attention would now turn to the World Assemblies of God Fellowship Congress, scheduled to be held in Ghana from October 14 to 16, 2026.

The congress, he noted, will be the first of its kind to be hosted in Africa.

He called on pastors and church members across the country to support and participate in the historic event, particularly the evening programmes expected to take place at the Accra Sports Stadium.

“Hosting an event of global significance comes with enormous responsibilities,” he said, adding that the church would rely on God’s grace to fulfil its obligations and present Ghana well on the global stage.

He urged pastors to mobilise their members for the congress and ensure strong participation in the various programmes.

Rev. Wengam used his acceptance speech to appeal for reconciliation and unity following the elections.

He urged members to “bury the past, strengthen the bridges of unity and move forward with the love of Christ.”

Reflecting on his own journey in church leadership, he recalled losing an election for a regional secretary position in 2014, saying the experience taught him that setbacks could be part of God’s preparation for greater responsibilities.

“I thank God I didn’t become regional secretary at the time. It wasn’t the time,” he observed.

He encouraged ministers and members who may have lost in the elections not to lose hope, stressing that leadership opportunities could emerge at unexpected moments for those who remained faithful and committed to service.

“You don’t need to be an Executive Presbytery member. You don’t need to be a district pastor. God can catapult you from anywhere once you remain faithful and committed,” Rev.Wengam noted.

The General Superintendent also paid tribute to his family, including his late parents, and thanked his wife, Lady Mrs Monica Wengam, for her support.

He expressed appreciation to members of the outgoing Executive Presbytery, the newly elected leaders, the Elections Committee and delegates who participated in the electoral process.

Rev. Wengam announced the appointment of new officers. Rev. Boniface Keelson has been appointed the new Foreign Missions Director, while Rev. Aaron Lambon Fant, who was adjudged the Best Church Planter at the event, is now the new Home Missions Director.

In a sermon delivered after the declaration of the results and the announcement of the new appointments, Rev. Gregg T. Johnson, main speaker for the event advised pastors of Assemblies of God, Ghana, to keep God’s fire burning, stressing that the fire signifies the presence of God.

Rev. Wengam later led fervent prayers for God to send fresh fire throughout the church to promote and sustain its healthy growth in the years ahead. He also led prayers for God to manifest His glory among the congregation and prayed for the sick, as well as both past and newly elected Executive Presbytery officers.

Rev. Wengam was supported by the newly elected Assistant General Superintendent, Rev. Dr. Kwadwo Bempah, in praying for the sick.

The peaceful conclusion of the elections and the 32nd Biennial General Council Meeting, which brings together the church’s highest decision and policy-making body, now paves the way for the newly elected Executive Presbytery to lead Assemblies of God, Ghana, over the next four years.
