The Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) has arrested the alleged kingpin behind an attempted export of methamphetamine from Ghana to Australia, as investigations continue to identify and apprehend other suspects linked to the international drug trafficking operation.
Speaking in an interview with Adom News, Deputy Director-General of NACOC, Alexander Twum-Barimah, disclosed that the Commission had made significant progress in the case involving about 320 kilograms of methamphetamine intercepted by Australian authorities.
According to him, the suspected mastermind has been arrested, while efforts are underway to track down other individuals believed to have participated in the operation.
“With regard to the recent case in which Australian authorities intercepted about 320 kilograms of methamphetamine concealed in a shipment from Ghana, we have successfully arrested the lead person and are looking forward to arresting the remaining persons involved,” Mr. Twum-Barimah said.
He also revealed that NACOC has destroyed narcotic drugs and related products valued at more than GHS37 million after obtaining the required court approval and independent verification by the Ghana Standards Authority.
The destroyed items included 9.6 tonnes of cannabis, 46.89 kilograms of cocaine, 2,734 bottles of cannabis-infused drinks, and 130 boxes of hemp-related products.
Mr. Twum-Barimah explained that the destruction exercise forms part of the Commission’s efforts to prevent seized narcotics from finding their way back into circulation and to reinforce its commitment to tackling illicit drug trafficking.
Meanwhile, Director-General of NACOC, Brigadier General Maxwell Obuba Mantey, disclosed that five students of Central University arrested for allegedly producing and selling cannabis-infused products have been arraigned before court.
The students are accused of manufacturing and selling cannabis-infused ice cream, sobolo, toffees and eggs.
NACOC has reaffirmed its determination to intensify the fight against drug trafficking and the proliferation of narcotic substances across the country through sustained enforcement and prosecution efforts.
