Police investigations into the 2020 election-related violence in the Banda Constituency indicate that Joe Danquah, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Parliamentary Candidate for the 2020 General Elections, led a mob attack on Moro Shimo, the brother of the NDC Member of Parliament.
This was disclosed by the Minister for the Interior during the Government Accountability Series, on Monday, August 24, where he presented an update on investigations into election-related violence recorded during the 2020 and 2024 general elections.
According to him, the attack on Moro Shimo triggered reprisal and counter-reprisal attacks between youths of Banda Ahenkro and Kabronu, eventually resulting in the death of Silas Wulochamey.
“Police investigations indicate that Joe Danquah, the NPP Parliamentary Candidate for the 2020 General Elections, led a mob to assault Moro Shimo, brother of the NDC MP,” the Minister said.
“This triggered reprisal and counter-reprisal attacks by the youth of Banda Ahenkro and Kabronu, culminating in the murder of the deceased.”
The incident occurred on July 13, 2020, during a voter registration exercise, amid confrontations between supporters of the NPP and the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Police investigations have so far led to the identification and arrest of several suspects in connection with the case, including Danquah and Gabriel Yaw Agyei alias Abodie, who is suspected of stabbing Wulochamey.
Other suspects identified in the case are Inusah alias Kapo, Kwasi Amos alias Olele, Kwaku Bio, Kwame Shilla, Kwabena Badu alias Last Two and Kwasi Dargarti. The Police say the suspects were allegedly involved in the assaults and subsequent killing.
Agyei, identified as the prime suspect in the stabbing and killing, was arraigned before the Adabraka District Court in Accra on March 11, 2026, on charges of conspiracy to commit murder and murder.
He was subsequently granted bail by the Accra High Court on April 14, 2026, with his next court hearing scheduled for August 31, 2026.
The Banda case forms part of a wider investigation into election-related violence following President John Dramani Mahama’s directive on January 10, 2025, for thorough and impartial investigations into incidents recorded during the 2020 and 2024 general elections.
Following the directive, the Inspector-General of Police constituted a Special Investigation Task Force under the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) to undertake the investigations and pursue those responsible.
