Ghana’s Black Meteors have secured a bye to the second round of the qualifiers for the 2027 Africa U-23 Cup of Nations after being among 14 countries exempted from the opening round based on their points ranking.

The exemption means Ghana will not participate in the first round of the qualifying campaign and will begin their quest for qualification at the second-round stage.

The Black Meteors will join several of Africa’s top-ranked U-23 teams at that stage, including Morocco, Mali, South Africa, Côte d’Ivoire and Nigeria.

The other countries granted byes are Guinea, Niger, Algeria, Cameroon, Congo, Gabon, Zambia and Senegal.

The first round of the qualifiers will feature the remaining participating nations, with the winners progressing to the second round to face the 14 exempted teams.

Although the bye reduces the number of hurdles Ghana must overcome to reach the tournament, the Black Meteors will still need to win their second-round tie to secure a place at the 2027 tournament.

The Africa U-23 Cup of Nations provides a platform for emerging players across the continent to gain international experience and compete at a high level ahead of potential progression to senior national teams.

The 2027 edition is provisionally scheduled for November, although the Confederation of African Football (CAF) is yet to announce the final dates and complete qualifying schedule.

Ghana will now await the conclusion of the opening round to discover its second-round opponent.

With several highly ranked teams also entering the competition at that stage, the second round is expected to feature a number of potentially high-profile encounters as the Black Meteors seek to secure qualification for the tournament proper.
