The Electoral Commission has scheduled Tuesday, March 3, 2026, for a parliamentary by-election in the Ayawaso East Constituency following the death of the sitting Member of Parliament, Mahama Naser Toure.

Mr Toure, a fourth-term MP, passed away at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital after a period of illness.

In a statement on Friday, January 16, 2026, the Electoral Commission said the seat became vacant as a result of the MP’s death and that constitutional provisions required a by-election to be held.

“Following the unfortunate death of the Member of Parliament for the Ayawaso East Constituency; Hon. Mahama Naser Toure, the seat of the Constituency in Parliament has become vacant. In accordance with Article 112 (5) of the Constitution, as amended, the Electoral Commission will hold a By-Election in the Constituency on Tuesday, 3rd March, 2026,” the statement said.

The Commission announced that nominations will be received from Monday, February 9, to Wednesday, February 11, 2026, at the Ayawaso East Municipal Office of the Commission at North Ridge. Nomination forms are available for download from the Commission’s website starting Friday, January 16, 2026.

Prospective candidates are required to submit completed nomination forms endorsed by two registered voters as proposer and seconder, with the support of eighteen other registered voters in the constituency.

Candidates must also provide two recent passport-sized photographs against a red background and pay a filing fee of GH¢10,000. Female candidates and persons with disabilities will pay a reduced fee of GH¢7,500.

The statement was signed by the Deputy Chairman of the Commission in charge of Operations, Samuel Tettey, who urged the public and aspiring candidates to be guided by the timelines and requirements.

Meanwhile, discussions have begun within the constituency, particularly among supporters of the governing National Democratic Congress, on potential candidates to contest the seat.

Names being mentioned include Baba Jamal Mohammed Ahmed and Dr Yakubu Azindow, both of whom contested the party’s last parliamentary primary against the late MP.
