Transport fares to remain unchanged despite temporary diesel price relief – GPRTU, GRTCC

Before making any changes to transport fares, the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) have announced that existing fares will remain in force nationwide until further notice.

The decision follows the government’s announcement of a temporary reduction in the regulatory margin on diesel by GHS2.00 per litre for one month, effective Tuesday, August 4, 2026.

In a joint statement, the two transport bodies welcomed the government’s intervention, describing it as a positive response to concerns they had raised over the increasing cost of fuel and its impact on commercial transport operators.

They disclosed that the leadership of the transport unions had held discussions with the sector minister, urging the government to take immediate steps to cushion drivers from escalating fuel costs.

The joint statement was signed by the General Secretary of the GPRTU, Godfred Abulbire, and the General Secretary of the GRTCC, Emmanuel Ohene Yeboah.

According to the statement, the reduction in diesel prices reflects the outcome of those engagements.

The unions further expressed optimism that the relief measure would be extended beyond the initial one-month period should global fuel prices continue to rise.

Following consultations with their national executives and other key stakeholders, the GPRTU and GRTCC resolved that transport fares would not be increased on any route until further notice.

They subsequently directed all commercial drivers, station masters and branch executives to strictly comply with the current approved fare structure.

The unions also warned against arbitrary fare increases, stressing that passengers must not be charged above the officially approved rates. They encouraged commuters to report any instances of overcharging to the nearest union office for prompt action.
