The Mayor of Kumasi, Mr Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi, has proposed that government officially designate the first Friday of every month as National Sanitation Day to improve participation in clean-up exercises across the country.
The Mayor made the appeal on Friday during an interaction with the media after inspecting sanitation activities taking place across the Kumasi Metropolis as part of the nationwide clean-up campaign.
According to Mr Boadi, shifting the national exercise from its current schedule on the first Saturday of every month to a weekday would significantly increase public and institutional participation.
He explained that the turnout and level of engagement witnessed during Friday’s exercise far exceeded that of previous Saturday clean-up campaigns, particularly among public institutions and private sector organisations.
The Mayor attributed the improved participation to the fact that workers in both the public and private sectors are already actively engaged during weekdays, making it easier for institutions to mobilise staff for such exercises.
Expressing satisfaction with the response to the first day of the two-day national flood aftermath clean-up exercise, Mr Boadi described the level of civic participation as encouraging and a positive sign for future sanitation initiatives.
He argued that formalising a weekday National Sanitation Day would help institutionalise a culture of cleanliness and environmental responsibility across the country.
According to him, such a move would ensure that individuals, businesses and public institutions consistently contribute to maintaining clean and healthy communities.
The Mayor further stressed that improving sanitation practices remains critical to preventing flooding, protecting public health and creating safer urban environments.
