Businessman and philanthropist Ibrahim Mahama has pledged a special financial reward for the Black Stars following their impressive showing at the ongoing FIFA World Cup, expressing confidence that the team can progress further in the tournament.
He made the commitment when he visited the team’s camp in Rhode Island on Thursday, June 25, ahead of Ghana’s final Group game against Croatia scheduled for Saturday, June 27.
Addressing the players and technical staff, Mr. Mahama commended their determination, discipline, and fighting spirit, noting that their performances had convinced him to release financial support he had previously withheld until the team demonstrated strong results on the pitch.
“I was holding money back even when I pledged and I told the minister that look, I won’t give you the money until I see some good performance.
But now I want to rush home and give him all the money,” he said.
His pledge adds to growing private sector and individual support for the Black Stars during the global tournament, as stakeholders rally behind the team’s campaign.
Mr. Mahama also praised head coach Carlos Queiroz for his impact on the squad, commending him for quickly shaping the team since taking charge shortly before the tournament.
“With the coach, I am very, very proud because you came in at a shorter time.
You have been able to put the boys together in your wonderful performance,” he added.
Earlier this year, Mr. Mahama’s company, Engineers and Planners, contributed $5 million to Ghana’s World Cup fundraising initiative aimed at supporting the national team’s participation in the tournament co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
