Transport operators across Ghana have threatened to withdraw their commercial vehicles from the roads from September 21, 2026, if the government fails to address a number of concerns affecting the transport sector.
In a statement dated September 16, 2026, the operators directed all commercial vehicle drivers to prepare to park their vehicles until further notice if their concerns are not addressed.
The operators have appealed to President John Dramani Mahama to urgently intervene in what they describe as pressing challenges confronting drivers and transport businesses.
Among their concerns are increases in Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) charges and penalty fees, alleged harassment by police personnel on the roads, rising fuel prices and increasing spare parts costs.
They are also demanding that the government allow an increase in commercial transport fares, while expressing concern over rising vehicle insurance premiums.
The operators said the cumulative effect of the increased operational costs was putting significant pressure on drivers and transport businesses.
They have therefore given the government until September 21, 2026, to address their concerns.
“If these issues are not addressed by 21st September 2026, all drivers will park their cars until further notice.”
The statement was signed by Kwaku Boateng, National Public Relations Officer of the Alliance of Drivers; Charles Addo, National Public Relations Officer of Cooperatives; and Adu Yeboah, Regional Public Relations Officer of Protoa.
The transport operators are urging the government to engage them on the concerns before the deadline to avert a possible disruption to commercial transport services.
They said the planned action would remain in force until their demands are addressed.
