The Institute for Energy Security (IES) has called on the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) to provide full and transparent information on the challenges confronting Ghana’s national power system following another nationwide blackout.
The IES said the latest outage, which occurred at about 4:30 a.m. on Thursday, August 20, 2026, was caused by a major fault on the Akosombo–Volta transmission lines.
The development has heightened concerns about the stability and reliability of the national grid, with the Institute noting that the country has experienced a worrying trend of nationwide blackouts over the past three weeks.
The IES also recalled the nationwide blackout on July 29, which followed the tripping of several generating plants across the national power system.
Following that incident, GRIDCo promised to conduct a technical investigation to establish the cause of the disturbance and inform corrective measures to prevent a recurrence.
However, the IES said the findings of that investigation have not been made public three weeks after the incident.
“Three weeks on, no such report has been made public,” the Institute stated.
The IES is now urging GRIDCo to fast-track efforts to restore full power and conduct a thorough technical assessment of the latest outage.
It is also demanding greater transparency from the system manager, saying Ghanaians deserve to be properly informed about the challenges affecting the national power system.
“GRIDCo must also undertake full and transparent disclosure to the public regarding the challenges confronting the national power system, so that Ghanaians are kept properly informed,” the IES said.
The Institute further called for urgent short-term assessments to guarantee the stability of the power system and grid.
It also advocated critical investments to strengthen the long-term resilience of the national grid and prevent recurring disruptions to electricity supply.
