The Ministry of Finance has officially handed over its former headquarters building to the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS), a move expected to provide additional office space and strengthen the country’s statistical operations.
The building, which originally served as a facility for the Ghana Statistical Service before becoming the home of the Ministry of Finance for more than five decades, was formally returned to the Service during a handover ceremony attended by the Minister for Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Baah Forson.
Speaking at the event, the Government Statistician, Dr. Alhassan Iddrisu expressed appreciation to the Finance Minister and the Ministry for facilitating the transfer and for personally overseeing the handover process.
According to him, the decision by the Finance Minister to be present in person for the ceremony underscored the importance government places on data and evidence-based policymaking.
He noted that the return of the facility would create additional working space for staff and enhance the Service’s capacity to deliver timely and accurate statistics for national development.
The Government Statistician said the additional space would support ongoing efforts to improve the quality and relevance of Ghana’s statistical data, particularly in key areas such as inflation, economic growth and employment.
He disclosed that government expects the Service to deliver a rebased Consumer Price Index (CPI) that accurately reflects current consumption patterns of Ghanaians, as well as a rebased Gross Domestic Product (GDP) that captures the true size and structure of the modern economy.
He also highlighted the need for more comprehensive labour market data to provide a clearer picture of employment trends and job creation across the country.
The Government Statistician described the handover as more than the transfer of a building, saying it represented an investment in the country’s statistical system and a recognition of the critical role data plays in national decision-making.
He expressed gratitude to the Finance Minister and the Ministry of Finance for supporting the work of the Statistical Service and reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to producing reliable data to guide policy and development planning in Ghana.
