Residents and businesses around Kaneshie and adjoining communities are expected to benefit from improved flood protection following the commencement of critical drainage works under the GARID Project.
The project, which will involve construction along the westbound section of the Dota-Busia Highway, is being implemented as part of efforts to address persistent flooding in the Greater Accra Region.
The Ministry of Works and Housing said the temporary traffic restrictions associated with the project are necessary to allow construction to proceed safely.
“We believe that the infrastructure projects succeed not only because of engineering expertise, but also because of effective communication and public cooperation,” the ministry said.
The drainage works are expected to improve the resilience of the Kaneshie enclave and surrounding communities, which have experienced recurring flooding.
The ministry acknowledged that the construction would create some inconvenience for motorists and commuters, including longer travel times.
However, it said the temporary disruption would pave the way for infrastructure that could provide a long-term solution to the flooding challenge.
The project team has already engaged transport unions, commercial drivers, traders, market women, schools, public institutions, community leaders and residents within the affected corridor.
The engagements were aimed at explaining the traffic management arrangements, gathering feedback and incorporating concerns into the implementation process.
The ministry said the success of the project would depend on cooperation among government institutions, local assemblies, security agencies, the media and the public.
“Together, let’s work to ensure successful implementation of the Kaneshie traffic management plan and the delivery of this critical flood mitigation infrastructure for the people of Greater Accra.”
