An Accra High Court has adjourned proceedings in the case involving Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, to July 6, 2026, to allow parties to engage in plea bargain discussions.
Chairman Wontumi is facing allegations of causing a financial loss of approximately GHS30 million to the Export-Import Bank (EXIM Bank).
At the court sitting, the presiding judge granted an adjournment after being informed that discussions were underway between the prosecution and the defense regarding the possibility of resolving the matter through a plea bargaining process.
The court directed both parties to use the intervening period to explore the option and provide an update when proceedings resume on July 6.
The case stems from allegations that the NPP regional chairman was involved in transactions that resulted in significant financial loss to the state-owned financial institution.
Details of the alleged offence are expected to be further canvassed before the court as the matter progresses.
Chairman Wontumi has not publicly commented on the latest development, while legal representatives on both sides are expected to continue negotiations ahead of the next hearing date.
The outcome of the plea bargain discussions could determine the next phase of the legal proceedings when the case returns to court next month.
