Former professional boxer Michael Nii Ayitey Okai, popularly known as Ayitey Powers, has been discharged by the Dansoman Circuit Court after the complainant in the alleged death threat case withdrew his complaint.
The development follows a withdrawal letter filed by the prosecution on behalf of the Director-General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, during proceedings on Wednesday, September 2, 2026.
Ayitey Powers had been facing a case over an alleged death threat directed at Ampofo Ankrah in a video that circulated on social media.
The 46-year-old former boxer reported himself to the Accra Regional Police Headquarters on Monday, August 24, following the circulation of the video. He was subsequently arrested and prosecuted.
He was remanded for one week by the Dansoman Circuit Court on August 25 and was scheduled to reappear on September 2.
Following the withdrawal of the complaint, however, the court discharged him.
An update on the case expressed appreciation to Ampofo Ankrah and others who supported the process, while urging Ayitey Powers and others to resort to civil or legal channels when disputes arise rather than taking the law into their own hands.
The Police had earlier cautioned the public against threats, verbal assaults and malicious comments, stressing that such conduct could attract legal consequences.
