The Afigya Kwabre South District Assembly in the Ashanti Region has summoned 17 individuals and institutions for various sanitation offences following the nationwide clean-up exercise held.
The offenders, who face possible prosecution, were cited for violating environmental sanitation bylaws during the district-wide exercise aimed at improving cleanliness and reducing flood risks.
Among those summoned is a Shell filling station at Afrancho, which was accused of allowing large quantities of refuse to accumulate on its premises.
District authorities also identified several business operators whose shop frontages and immediate surroundings were found to be unkempt, despite ongoing public education campaigns and directives on environmental cleanliness.
The enforcement exercise formed part of a coordinated sanitation campaign involving the Ghana Police Service, religious organisations, non-governmental organisations, Assembly staff, and residents.
Participants cleared heaps of refuse and desilted choked drains and gutters across several communities within the district.
Speaking to Kumasi FM during the exercise, the District Environmental Health Analyst, Mr. Kwame Kusi Agyemang-Badu, disclosed that most of the offenders were located within the Buoho and Afrancho areas.
He indicated that the Assembly is preparing to prosecute the offenders in court on Monday, stressing that the move is intended to serve as a deterrent to others who disregard environmental regulations.
The District Coordinating Director, Mr. Yakubu Baba Seidu Kamara, also condemned what he described as the persistent non-compliance of some residents with sanitation regulations.
He called on members of the public to adopt responsible waste disposal practices and support the Assembly’s efforts to maintain a clean, healthy and environmentally sustainable district.
