Ghanaian socialite Frederick Kumi, popularly known as Abu Trica, has been extradited to the United States to face allegations linked to an alleged multi-million-dollar romance fraud scheme.
The socialite was reportedly flown out of Ghana on Thursday, July 9, aboard a flight operated by Delta Air Lines, ending months of legal proceedings and court battles over his transfer to the United States.
American authorities are seeking Kumi in connection with allegations that he was part of a transnational criminal network accused of defrauding victims of approximately $8 million through an elaborate romance scam operation.
Investigators allege that members of the syndicate used fake online identities and fraudulent social media profiles to establish relationships with victims before convincing them to transfer money under false pretences.
Kumi was arrested in Ghana in December 2025 following an extradition request submitted by the United States government, after which the Office of the Attorney-General commenced proceedings to facilitate his transfer.
The extradition process attracted significant public attention and was marked by a series of legal challenges mounted by his defence team in an attempt to halt his transfer to the United States.
Earlier this year, the High Court granted the socialite bail in the sum of GH¢30 million with two justified sureties after he had spent several months in custody pending the outcome of the extradition proceedings.
However, Ghanaian courts subsequently cleared the final legal hurdles, paving the way for his extradition after dismissing challenges to the request by US authorities.
Kumi is expected to appear before a court in the United States to answer charges including conspiracy to commit wire fraud and conspiracy to commit money laundering.
He has consistently denied wrongdoing throughout the proceedings.
His extradition forms part of ongoing cooperation between Ghana and the United States in combating transnational financial crimes and cyber-enabled fraud.
Further details regarding the charges and court proceedings in the United States are expected to emerge in the coming weeks.
