The government has launched the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) Membership Value Programme, an initiative aimed at providing immediate benefits to contributors and pensioners while strengthening confidence in Ghana’s social security system.
Speaking on behalf of the Minister for Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, at the launch, Deputy Minister of Finance, Hon. Thomas Nyarko Ampem, said the programme reflects government’s commitment to ensuring that Ghanaian workers enjoy security, dignity and peace of mind after years of service.
Hon. Nyarko Ampem, described the initiative as a forward-looking approach to social security, noting that the value of pension membership should not only be experienced at retirement but throughout a contributor’s working life.
He commended the Director-General of SNIT, Mr. Kofi Osafo-Maafo, and Ecobank for their roles in developing the programme, which provides contributors and pensioners with access to discounts, services and other benefits through strategic partnerships.
According to him, the initiative comes at a time when Ghana’s economy is showing signs of recovery, with improved growth prospects, declining inflation and renewed investor confidence following government’s economic reforms.
He stressed that a sustainable pension system depends on a stable economy, while a resilient economy also requires strong domestic savings mobilised through trusted institutions such as SNIT.
SNIT currently serves more than 2.1 million active contributors and over 260,000 pensioners, with the Deputy Finance Minister describing every contribution as an act of trust and every pension payment as a promise fulfilled.
He noted that President John Dramani Mahama has directed a comprehensive review of Ghana’s pension system to improve adequacy, sustainability, coverage and value, with special attention to workers in the informal sector.
The Membership Value Programme is expected to extend the benefits of SSNIT membership beyond retirement by creating value for workers while they are still contributing, improving the quality of life of pensioners and providing businesses with access to a large and trusted membership base.
Hon. Nyarko Ampem described the programme as “innovation with purpose” that will promote financial inclusion, encourage formalisation and strengthen collaboration between the public and private sectors.
He, however, emphasised that trust remains the foundation of a successful pension system, urging SSNIT to maintain high standards of transparency, professionalism and accountability in managing workers’ contributions.
“The savings entrusted to SSNIT belong to Ghanaian workers.
They must always be managed prudently, professionally, and in the best long-term interests of contributors and pensioners,” he stated.
Using an analogy, he compared pension contributions to planting a tree, explaining that the system must be nurtured today to provide security and protection for future generations.
He urged stakeholders to ensure that pensions continue to protect workers’ contributions, preserve the dignity of retirees and translate economic progress into improved living standards for Ghanaians.
The Deputy Finance Minister congratulated the SSNIT board, management and staff for the initiative and expressed appreciation to Ecobank for its partnership in the programme.
