The Minerals Income Investment Fund (MIIF) and the Cyber Security Authority (CSA) are exploring ways to strengthen cybersecurity protection across Ghana’s minerals sector amid growing digital threats.

The discussions followed a meeting between the two institutions when a delegation from the CSA, led by its Director-General, Divine Selase Agbeti, visited MIIF.

The engagement focused on the increasing cybersecurity risks facing institutions as digital platforms and interconnected technologies become more central to economic and institutional operations.

MIIF Chief Executive Officer, Justina Nelson, said the growing adoption of digital technologies must be accompanied by stronger measures to protect institutions against emerging cyber threats.

She said, “While digital transformation continues to improve efficiency and service delivery, it also exposes institutions to evolving cyber risks that require continuous vigilance, investment and collaboration.”

Mrs. Nelson commended the CSA for its engagement with State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) and other public institutions to strengthen the security of their digital environments.

She also stressed the need for stronger protection of the information and technological assets that support operations within the minerals industry.

The CSA acknowledged MIIF’s efforts to strengthen its technological infrastructure and security systems but emphasised that cybersecurity requires continuous institutional attention.

The Authority noted that cybercriminals are adopting increasingly sophisticated methods, making it necessary for organisations to regularly assess and strengthen their security systems.

It also highlighted employee awareness and institutional preparedness as important components of effective cybersecurity.

According to the CSA, equipping employees and other stakeholders with the knowledge to identify and appropriately respond to potential cyber threats is critical to preventing cyber incidents.

The two institutions also identified capacity development, public awareness and the exchange of technical expertise as potential areas of collaboration.

The proposed cooperation is expected to enhance the minerals sector’s ability to protect sensitive information and critical digital assets while strengthening its preparedness to respond to emerging cybersecurity threats.
