The Ghana Education Service (GES) has temporarily closed the Zohe Evangelical Presbyterian (E.P.) Schools in the Yendi Municipality following an armed attack on the school premises that disrupted academic activities and left the headmaster injured.
This follows an incident that reportedly occurred on Thursday, July 9, following a disagreement between some community members and school authorities over attempts to construct a commercial shed on the school compound.
The Service said some armed men subsequently stormed the school and fired warning shots into the air, while the headmaster of Zohe E.P. Junior High School, Mohammed Shani Gazali, was assaulted during the incident.
Mr. Gazali was treated at a hospital and later discharged.
In response to the security concerns, GES, in a statement has announced the temporary closure of the school.
“In the interest of the safety and security of learners and staff, the Zohe E.P. Schools have been closed down temporarily while engagements continue with relevant stakeholders,” the statement said.
GES indicated that the school is expected to reopen on Monday, July 13, subject to clearance from security agencies.
Although no casualties were recorded, the Service said the incident caused panic among students and staff and resulted in the vandalisation of some school property.
GES condemned the attack and warned that acts that undermine the safety of schools would not be tolerated.
“The safety of students and staff remains its utmost priority,” it added.
