President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to modernise and revive the abandoned Volta Star Textiles factory at Juapong in the North Tongu Constituency as part of government’s efforts to restore Ghana’s textile industry.
The President disclosed that government is finalising arrangements with a transaction adviser to facilitate the selection of a strategic investor to help bring the factory back into operation.
He made the announcement on Thursday, July 16, 2026, during the sod-cutting ceremony for the Juapong 24-hour market project.
According to President Mahama, the revival of Volta Star Textiles is a key component of government’s broader industrialisation agenda, aimed at creating employment opportunities, strengthening the textile value chain and positioning Juapong as a major manufacturing centre.
The factory, which was once one of Ghana’s leading textile producers, employed thousands of workers and contributed significantly to the local economy before its decline and eventual shutdown.
Its collapse resulted in the loss of more than 2,000 jobs.
President Mahama further revealed that government is engaging with the Government of Benin to secure a reliable supply of cotton to support production once the factory resumes operations.
He assured traditional authorities, former employees and residents of Juapong that efforts were underway to attract an investor who would undertake the redesign and modernisation of the facility.
The President encouraged young people in Juapong and the wider Volta Region to prepare to take advantage of employment and business opportunities expected to emerge from the revival of the factory and other government initiatives.
