Assets belonging to the former Chief Executive Officer of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Dr. Mustapha Abdul-Hamid, have been seized and frozen by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).
This was announced by the OSP in a post on X on Tuesday, November 4, 2025.
According to the OSP, the seized assets are “valued at more than GH¢100 million and over US$100,000, with additional assets under active tracing.”
The post further explained that the action was “based on strong documentary, banking, and transaction evidence linking the proceeds to the alleged offences.”
Dr. Abdul-Hamid is currently facing prosecution at the Criminal High Court in Accra on several corruption and financial crime charges.
Despite publicly dismissing the case as “useless,” he has been accused of masterminding what investigators describe as a “grand extortion and laundering scheme” that cost the State and the petroleum sector more than GH¢291 million and over US$330,000.
The charges against him include:
Conspiracy to Commit Extortion by a Public Officer – allegedly plotted with two NPA officials to extort GH¢291,574,087.19 and US$332,407.47 from bulk oil transporters and oil marketing companies between December 2022 and December 2024.
Two Counts of Extortion by a Public Officer – for allegedly receiving GH¢24 million and GH¢230,000 unlawfully from oil transporters and haulage firms.
Two Counts of Using Public Office for Profit – accused of abusing his office for private gain, enriching himself with GH¢24 million and GH¢230,000.
Money Laundering – found to possess GH¢15,343,251.29, an amount considered disproportionate to his known legitimate income.
The trial has been adjourned to Thursday, November 13, 2025.
