Six persons have been arrested following a violent attack at New Winneba in the Central Region that left three people dead and about 15 others injured.

The Ghana Police Service said the suspects were arrested on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, after about 300 irate persons allegedly stormed the township and attacked residents, shops and other properties.

The suspects are Kweku Kakraba, 52; Arko Thomas, 19; Samuel Tulasi, 19; Samuel Gyasi, 22; Emmanuel Okyere, 22; and Seth Osei, 22.

A locally made single-barrel gun and an empty AAA cartridge were also recovered from the scene.

“One locally made single barrel gun was retrieved, and one AAA empty cartridge was also retrieved from the crime scene,” the Police said.

The violence began at about 10:40 a.m., with the group reportedly coming from Gomoa Oguakrom, Gomoa Yenkuadze and Gomoa Pomadze.

The Police said the attackers were armed with guns, stones, cutlasses and sticks and targeted residents, shops and properties.

About 15 injured victims, including a police officer, were taken to the Trauma and Specialist Hospital in Winneba.

“In the course of the attack, about 15 injured victims were sent to the Trauma and Specialist Hospital – Winneba, including an officer. Three persons were confirmed dead by medical officer on duty,” the Police stated.

Additional personnel from the Winneba, Agona Swedru and Mankessim divisions, as well as the IGP’s special team, were deployed to restore calm.

Two armoured vehicles were also sent from Police Headquarters.

Six snap check points have since been mounted, while day and night patrols have been intensified. PID and CID personnel have also been deployed to monitor the situation.

The Police said, “The area remains calm, and the situation is currently under control.”

“All six suspects are in police custody assisting with investigations,” the statement added.
