A 47-year-old woman has been arrested by authorities in Anambra State, Nigeria, for allegedly performing caesarean sections and other major surgical procedures without recognised medical qualifications or authorisation.
The suspect, identified as Mrs Onyinyechi Esther Charles, was arrested at a traditional birth attendant (TBA) facility she allegedly operated in Umueri, Anambra East Local Government Area of the state.
According to the Anambra State Ministry of Health, investigations revealed that the woman had allegedly been carrying out caesarean sections, normal deliveries and other surgical procedures despite lacking the required medical training and licence.
The arrest followed an inspection of the facility led by the state Commissioner for Health, Dr Afam Obidike, alongside security personnel and officials from the local government.
During the operation, authorities reportedly recovered surgical instruments, medical equipment and hospital beds believed to have been used for the alleged procedures.
Officials also said the facility had been linked to reported cases of medical complications and deaths, raising concerns over the dangers associated with unlicensed medical practices.
The Health Commissioner described the situation as a serious threat to public safety and warned that the government would continue its crackdown on medical quackery.
He urged residents, particularly pregnant women, to seek healthcare services only from approved facilities operated by qualified and licensed professionals.
The facility has since been sealed, while Mrs Charles is expected to face legal proceedings.
The allegations against her remain subject to determination by the court.
