The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), together with the Commercial Transport Operators of Ghana, has warned of a 20 per cent increase in transport fares on the Kasoa–Winneba route if government fails to undertake urgent repairs on the deteriorating road.
In a joint press release issued on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, the transport operators expressed concern over the worsening condition of the Kasoa–Winneba road, describing it as a major challenge to both drivers and commuters.
According to the operators, they had earlier issued a two-week ultimatum to the government during a demonstration held on June 12, demanding immediate intervention on the road.
However, they claim that no significant work has been carried out since then.
The transport unions said the poor state of the road continues to cause extensive damage to vehicles, increase fuel consumption, and result in long travel delays.
They warned that unless visible action is taken to address the situation, transport fares on the route will be increased by 20 per cent effective Monday, June 29, 2026.
The operators explained that the proposed fare adjustment is intended to offset the rising costs of vehicle maintenance, fuel consumption, and the expenses associated with using alternative routes due to the road’s condition.
The unions appealed to the government and the Ministry of Roads and Highways to urgently address the challenges on the Kasoa–Winneba road to avert the planned fare increase.
They also called on commuters to understand their position, stressing that the decision is aimed at protecting the livelihoods of transport operators and ensuring the continued operation of their services.
The statement was signed by Mr. Samuel Amoah, National Deputy Public Relations Officer of the GPRTU.
