The Ghana Police Service has announced its participation in the two-day National General Cleaning Exercise aimed at restoring sanitation in communities affected by the recent floods and reducing environmental health risks.
The Service has called on members of the public to join police officers in various communities across the country to help keep Ghana safe and clean.

The exercise forms part of government’s response to sanitation challenges and efforts to restore communities following the devastating floods that struck parts of the country in June.
Activities will include cleaning public spaces, desilting and clearing choked drains, and removing waste and debris from streets and waterways.

The nationwide initiative is bringing together government officials, security agencies, local authorities, civil society organisations and residents to improve environmental sanitation and prevent future flooding incidents.
President John Dramani Mahama declared Friday, July 10, and Saturday, July 11, 2026, as National General Cleaning Days in the seven regions affected by the floods as part of efforts to prevent a recurrence of the disaster and restore cleanliness in affected communities.

The exercise is being organised under the auspices of the Post-Flood Mitigation Committee and is being held under the theme: “Our Actions, Our Future: Cleaning Ghana after the floods.”
The announcement follows the June 29, 2026 floods, which were triggered by hours of torrential rainfall that inundated large parts of Accra and several other communities across seven regions.

The floods claimed lives, displaced hundreds of residents and submerged homes, businesses and major roads across affected areas.
According to authorities, the disaster exposed the extent of poor waste disposal practices and blocked drainage systems, as floodwaters swept tonnes of plastic waste, refuse and other debris from drains, waterways and streets.

The government subsequently established the Post-Flood Mitigation Committee to coordinate relief efforts and implement measures aimed at improving sanitation, clearing drains and strengthening flood prevention measures nationwide.

The Ghana Police Service has urged citizens to actively participate in the exercise and work together to build cleaner, safer and more resilient communities.
