The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) is set to transform outdoor advertising in Kumasi, with plans to introduce digital advertising boards from 2027.
The move is aimed at reducing the number of billboards, improving road safety and creating a more organised and attractive city.

Kumasi Mayor, Hon. Richard Kwasi Ofori Boadi Agyemang, announced the plan during an engagement with 28 registered advertisers in the Kumasi Metropolis.
According to the Mayor, the current outdoor advertising system has become increasingly disorganised, with billboards of different sizes placed haphazardly along major roads.

He said the situation could obstruct motorists and pedestrians while affecting the aesthetic appeal of the city.
“For a city to thrive, there must be order.”
Under the new policy, KMA will introduce guidelines covering the number of advertising boards allowed along designated roads, approved billboard sizes and designs, and specific requirements for major commercial corridors.

The guidelines will cover key areas including Airport Roundabout, Sofoline, Ahodwo and Bekwai Roundabout. Separate specifications will also apply to the Kumasi Zoo, Kejetia and the Central Business District.
KMA has also maintained a ban on billboards along the Ahodwo-Santasi stretch until the ongoing road dualisation project is completed.
The Mayor warned that over-aged and dilapidated billboards would not be allowed. He also said billboards with outstanding payments would be removed in line with the Assembly’s earlier directive.

During the engagement, advertisers raised concerns about the relocation of billboards already removed from the Ahodwo-Santasi stretch.
They also sought clarification on the proposed billboard dimensions and approval processes.

Mr. Agyemang assured the advertisers that the reforms were not only intended to regulate the industry but also to create a modern advertising environment that would provide brands with better visibility and value.
The planned shift to digital billboards is expected to modernise outdoor advertising in Kumasi while helping KMA improve order, safety and the visual appearance of the city from 2027.
