An Accra High Court has convicted and sentenced journalist Larry Dogbey of The Herald newspaper to seven days’ imprisonment in a case involving businessman Kevin Okyere and Petraco SA.
The ruling was delivered on Thursday, June 25, 2026, by Justice Isaac Addo, following proceedings that have since sparked renewed public debate over press freedom and legal accountability in Ghana.
Dogbey’s conviction is linked to a petition reportedly filed by the multinational company, which was submitted to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS), and the Attorney-General’s Department.
The matter gained wider attention after The Herald published a report based on the petition.
Following the sentencing, Dogbey took to social media to express his dissatisfaction with the outcome, writing: “Ghana deserves better… Journalism is not a crime.”
The case has since generated discussion within media and civil society circles, with renewed calls for a careful balance between responsible journalism, due process, and the protection of press freedom.
Observers say the ruling is likely to further intensify conversations about the legal boundaries of investigative reporting in Ghana and the safeguards available to media practitioners in the performance of their duties.
